2022 Top Interior Design Trends

Interior design trends really transform from one era to the next in strong correlation with what is going on in the world. The interior of our home is something we see and interact with every single day, especially after Covid. Although we’ve spent much more time at home the past several years because of the global pandemic, the inside aesthetic of our abode has always played a big role in our emotions and even our welfare. According to an article in Vogue interviewing 14 designers to address the biggest 2022 trends, interior designer Timothy Corrigan of Timothy Corrigan Inc. shares that, “There is more and more research that shows the direct influence that our homes have, not only on our moods, but our overall health and well-being.” This really explains why today’s hottest trends are being driven from a desire for emotional peace after almost 3 years of such uncertainty. Our homes have become more important to us than ever before. That being said, the 2022 top interior design trends = moody tones and warmer vibes. It appears that all white minimalism is on its way out while warm, moody tones begin to take center stage. We are looking for a surrounding that brings us the most visual pleasure combined with comfort – truly a space that is inspired by the senses.

TRENDS ON THE RISE:

  • Shades of brown
    • Pastels will move aside making way for earthy browns from cognac to burnt umber to chocolate browns, camels, and caramels. Neutrals will also take the back seat while people experiment with bold/rich colors, however, they will stay close to shades you would find in nature.
    • Designer Athena Calderone predicts that 2022 will see paint colors of “rosy, terracotta tones, swathing rooms from wall to ceiling for a complete monochromatic moment that envelops you in its coziness.”

  • Nature-Inspired Surfaces and Objects (this one might just be our favorite!)
    • More time spent inside due to the pandemic = a heightened desire to connect with nature and bring it inside with us.
    • Natural surfaces range from anything between stoneware, terracotta, marble, and travertine which can have various applications such as backsplashes, bathtubs, furniture, and decorative objects. Really, the skies the limit! The fresh naturalness of these organic materials bring intriguing character and complexity to a space yet provide a calming, outdoor vibe. This also explains the heightened desire to incorporate large trees within our interiors form the black olive to Southern magnolias
    • “As a designer it is refreshing to see a return to material-driven applications—and it doesn’t seem to be cooling off. We see a desire for rich marbles, soft and organic materials, warmer tones and griege vs white on walls, earthy elements like wood, stone, and clay—this is all so classic and refreshing as it brings life to a space.” -Erick Garcia

2022 Top Interior Design Trends

  • Sculptural and Curved Furniture
    • Curved lines and shapes naturally register to us as safe and inviting rather than harsh and startling. Considering the events of the past couple of years, people seem to be more drawn to these more friendly and welcoming environments. You can expect everything from accent pieces and furniture to interior architecture boasting more friendly curves.

  • Elevated Outdoor Furniture
    • With more time spent at home and the desire to take things outside, especially when entertaining and during the warmer weather months, outdoor spaces will continue to transform into more chic extensions of our homes’ interiors.

2022 Top Interior Design Trends

  • Tactile Textiles and Textures
    • “I see a lot of people exploring different types of patterned jute, rush and abaca in 2022 as a way to expand that neutral foundation a rug provides and have some fun with pattern play.” -Jake Arnold, founder of The Expert
    • Revamping fabrics is where it’s at – colorful combinations of velvets, mohairs, linens, tartans etc.

  • Vintage and Sustainable Accents
    • Anything vintage has the power to set the tone for a space and to really tell a story. It brings a revered romanticism to a room. However, these nostalgic pieces bring more than just visual pleasure. They also serve as attractively sustainable additions through the repurposing of the old, combining meaningful history with modern use.

  • Leather Furniture and Upholstery
    • Like vintage pieces, leather can add richness as well in both its tone and the story it tells as it wears over time.

  • Up-and-Coming Artwork
    • “Art collections focused on up-and-coming artists and artists of color. Gone are the days of high-brow art collecting dominating the scene. My clients are looking for fresh faces on the art scene. They also want collections that reflect the diversity of our world and the perspectives these artists offer.” -Daniele Colding

  • Mixing Materials and Design Styles
    • The need to feel seen and to stand out from others has driven the rise in various material mixing and the combining of design styles. There will always be certain materials and styles that are more on trend in the moment but to intermix a unique variety of them can create a look that is both on trend and distinctive.

  • Bold Patterns and Colors
    • “The years of dull and muted colors have given way to bright, joyful colors that put a smile on your face. Wallpaper continues to be a dominant element in interiors, with strong patterns and more textured materials being used to create spaces that envelop and cocoon you.” -Timothy Corrigan

TRENDS APPROACHING THEIR DEMISE

  • Open Floor Plans
    • With people spending more time at home due to the pandemic and re-discovering the sacredness of their homes, people will begin to gravitate toward segmented rooms that provide more privacy, coziness, and focus.
  • All-White Everything
    • This really plays into the concept that interior design trends correlate with what is going on in the world and the emotions that we are feeling because of it. After experiencing several dark years, people are yearning to feel at ease, at peace, at comfort. Rather than the stark, white minimalism that has been on the forefront for a while now, we are wanting to feel embraced by warm, rich environments that evoke happiness.
  • Non-functional Decorative Objects
    • “Colored candles and useful everyday objects with personality will be replacing futile decorations that have neither meaning nor purpose.” -Kathryn M. Ireland
  • Boxy Sofas
    • “The square armed boxy sofa has definitely been retired.” -Martyn Lawrence Bullard
